Evaluation of Poper Degrees of Universties

Universities have been provided with the possibility of offering, based on its autonomy, diplomas and proper degrees, lacking the effects that the legal dispositions give to officially recognized degrees.

This possibility has formed, within the scope of the Autonomous region of the Canaries, a wide and varied supply of proper degrees. This supply has been diversified thanks to the variability which defines it: short or long duration studies (expert or master) and the modality of the chosen options (on-site teaching, virtual teaching…). It is a supply which concerns a great number of students and which practically involves all the Faculties, university departments and university centres of both Canarian universities. Besides a very important number of teachers take part in it.

ACECAU has been charged of the assessment and certification of the different elements which form the Canarian University System, what contributes to spread a culture of quality of it. On the other hand, Canarian Universities want to design a supply of proper degrees abided by standards of quality. As a result of the combination of these interests we get the decision of setting three initiatives, two during the first term of 2008 and the other one during the last term of this year, which want to influence the improvement of the quality in the supply of proper degrees, from their planning and authorization to their definitive consolidation, changing so into officially recognized degrees.

To coordinate these initiatives the Council of proper degrees has been created, where the three institutions (ACECAU, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) and the University of La Laguna (ULL)) are represented.
