Officially Recognised Postgraduate Programmes in the Autonomous Region of the Canaries
On January 21 2005, royal decrees were passed to recognize degrees and postgraduate courses, modified by royal decree 1509/2005 on December 16, to adapt the current structure of Spanish university studies to the EEES, according to Bologna Declaration and its complementary declarations.
The article 8.2 of the organic law of universities 6/2001, December 21, establishes that the implementation of the teaching leading to the obtaining of recognized university degrees, with validity in the whole national area, will be accorded by each autonomous region at the proposal of the social council, or by its own initiative, with the consent of the governing bodies of the universities with reference to a previous report.
Decree 80/2006 of the Canarian government regulates the procedures for the authorization of the implementation of teaching leading to the obtaining of officially recognized masters degrees of the autonomous region of the Canaries. This decree states that the regional minister of education will formulate this proposal to the government once the requirements and the anticipated reports of the board of directors of the university, and those of the university council of the Canaries, have been checked .Following this, the implementation of official programmes leading to officially recognized degrees will be authorized.
After the authorization of the implementation by the directive organization in charge of universities, the official programmes of authorized postgraduate courses will be sent to the Canarian Agency for the evaluation of university quality and accreditation for their evaluation. Once the evaluation is finished, the ACECAU will issue a report for each submitted application.
In relation to the implementation of new recognized postgraduate programmes, the ACECAU has created the ACECAU Guidebook for the Introduction of Recognized Postgraduate Programmes in the Autonomous Region of the Canaries taking into account the proposals of the report presented by the Spanish network of university quality agencies (REACU) in 2006, with the objective of providing Canarian universities with a useful tool for the elaboration and the assessment of proposals for the approval of recognized postgraduate studies according to royal decree 56/2005.
The ACECAU has also introduced the Guide for the Initial Report of Assessment: Guide for the Assessor, whose aim is to provide an orientation to external assessors in their task of elaborating the initial report about the implementation of recognized postgraduate programmes.
